Questions & Answers on Siman 430

    Question 1 of 4

Why do we refer to the Shabbat before Pesach as "Shabbat Ha'gadol"?
The term "Shabbat Ha'gadol," which means "the Great Shabbat," refers to the miracle that occurred in Egypt on the final Shabbat before the Exodus, when Benei Yisrael prepared their sheep for the Korban Pesach (paschal offering). The Egyptians, who looked to sheep and cattle as deities, saw Benei Yisrael preparing their gods as a sacrifice and, miraculously, were powerless to object. (Shulchan Aruch 430:1, Mishna Berura 430:1)
